Bilbao where to stay for one night?
I will be in Bilbao for one night my flight arrives late on the day I arrive (around 9 pm) and I need accomodation that is easy to get to from the airport, preferably using public transport. (I would rather not spend 40 euros on roundtrip taxi fare), which areas of town should I consider for accomodation, or specific hotels that I should look at. I have had to change my flight schedule and orginally I was not staying overnight in Bilbao so I never researched hotels in the city. I am going to Bilbao to visit the Guggenheim which I will do the morning after I arrive. Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you.

I certainly am no bilbao expert but I can tell you what worked for me. I took the airport bus to town and got a cab to Hotel Nervion. Reasonably priced and walking distance to the Guggenheim. It is not an old hotel filled with charm but a 10-12 year old "modern" hotel with complete services. It worked good for me. SimplySpain is a travel agency based near Bilbao and was very helpful to me on a recent Basque Country trip. It's their backyard. Mikelg is a frequent commenter on this board from Bilbao and you can "go to the bank" with his recs.

The airport bus number 3247 runs every 30 minutes from the airport to Gran Via, Plaza Moyúa and Alameda Recalde in the centre, €1.50.
You can find hotels close to this route in http://www.booking.com/city/es/bilbao.en.html
For example, the bus stops just outside luxcurious Hotel Carlton: http://www.booking.com/hotel/es/bilb...b672ee55b3033c

Thank you both, I wish the Carlton did fit my budget, but it doesn't I will look for nearby hotels. I do have a question about the airport bus, how late does it run? And, is it possible to take luggage (a suitcase) onboard. I forgot to ask this in my op.

Yes, the bus is fitted to take luggage onboard. The last trip into Bilbao leaves the airport at around midnight, more or less.
I usually get a taxi when I´m on the 22:20 flight from Madrid, and it usually costs around 16, 17 euros to the area near the hotel Barcelo Avenida.
Weber´s rec of the hotel Nervion is a good one, because if you are arriving late on a working day you are going to end up getting a taxi after the bus to get to the hotel. It would be different on Saturdays, the metro runs the whole night so you could have your pick of hotels along the line.
Bye now, Cova
