Message: If it is not too late, I will throw my hat in the ring. We stayed at the Hotel Derby Eiffel in the 7th. It is only about a block from the metro, 2 blocks from the head of Rue Cler and 3 blocks from two bakeries with stuff to die for. there is also a supermarket one block from the hotel and a laundromat within the first block. Please note that in Paris if you are close to a metro stop you are well located to get anywhere in a short time.

We stayed a couple of nights at the BW Hotel Derby Eiffel & thought it a very ordinary room, although it was certainly large enough.
We prefer the Best Western Hotel Cluny (especially the rooms on the back)in the 5th district. Rue Cler, despite Rick Steves' raves, doesn't impress everyone. (A lot more restaurants, e.g., on Rue Mouffetard.)
