best way Venice to Florence?

loackerwafer - do you understand the situation - OP will be at Venice airport already - taking train means schlepping over to Mestre train station (maybe an hour all told) and then the train takes yes 2 hours from there. Yes I usually recommend trains over flying but in this case a connecting flight if cheap enough makes sense and if don't have to wait at airport long between flights.
But really train would go to heart of Florence whereas Florence Airport is a bit outside Venice. So maybe train ain't bad after all -they could get a taxi from Venice airport to Mestre station. Maybe train is better!

Are there many direct flights to Venice or Florence anyway? Alitalia makes a stopover in Rome on the way to Florence or Venice.
I always fly Alitalia to Rome and take the train to either Florence or Venice instead of spending an extra hour on a plane.
That's why I can't understand why some people recommend to fly to Rome and out of Venice. If you fly out of Venice the plane will stop in Rome anyway.
