The best way as usual is to do it on your own. Rent a car and explore the island.

We traveled in Sicily by car. You might want to look at my trip report for ideas, skipping the long medical emergency part; click on my name to find it.

I did a combination of independent travel, by public transport, and a tour. See: Crumbling Palazzos and Creamy Cannoli - Savoring Sicily

IMO, independently. Certainly NOT a cruise.

Not by a cruise. We rented a car and toured most of Sicily with it’s incredible historic sites. It took more than two weeks and we had visited some of Sicily on amprevious teip.

Another not-by-cruise vote. It wouldn’t do Sicily justice. We drove on our trip in 2010, It was SICILY for our special trip, but had we both been in our late 70’s, I think we would have opted for a private driver to see everything that was of interest at our own pace.

I go with do-it-yourself. We landed on Palermo, spent three days there without a car. We picked up our car when leaving Palermo, then went to Piazza Armerina, Noto and then Catania where we returned the car. We spent two days in Catania.
