My husband and I will be spending 7 days in Croatia in late September. We would like to divide our time between Split and Dubrovnik. We thought we could take the bus from one city to the other or would other travelers recommend taking the ferry? We are also interested in visiting Mostar. What is the best way to visit Mostar, bus or guided tour?? Should we plan on spending the night? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

You can see Mostar on a day trip from Dubrovnik or from Split, but I think it's a bit closer to Dubrovnik. I would just take the bus there and then hire a local guide for a walking tour. You could spend 1 night in Mostar while traveling from Dubrovnik to Split (or from DBV to Split), but you would have to sort out the bus schedule to be sure it is possible. Otherwise, a day trip is fine to see the historic center.

You should take an early bus from Dubrovnik, spend the day in Mostar and take a late evening bus to Split. It doesn't work in reverse, as the last bus to Dubrovnik, leaves Mostar mid afternoon.

I agree with LittleVicky, and you could stay the night there if you wish, as RayKrebs says. It's usually nice to stay overnight in a town that gets many daytrippers.

From what I was able to learn when I planned my trip a year ago, a day-trip by bus from Dubrovnik might be quite difficult because, as LittleVicky said, the latest return bus leaves very little time to see anything in Mostar.

As RayKrebs indicated, one can see the historic center in a half day, but I found more than enough to see in Mostar to justify an overnight stay (with about a full day there), and seeing the Stari Most in varying lights was something I enjoyed.

I didn't hire a guide while I was there, but instead relied on information gleaned from guidebooks in advance of my visit.
