Best way to get from Chamonix to Venice?

Hi everyone,

I will be travelling with my wife on our honeymoon in France, Italy and Greece, but I have hit a bit of a road block in trying to find the best way to get from chamonix to venice. We didn't want to drive, partly because of some of the large fees for dropping the rental car off in venice but also as it is quite a long drive. If we were to fly, where is the best place to fly from? Or is it better to bus and/or train?

We have been leaning toward bus and train rather than flying because we haven't been able to find any flights that were either reasonably priced or much quicker (as I could only find flights from lyon/paris).

Bit confused, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Fly from Geneva with Easyjet. They only fly 3-4 times a week but there's a coach service between Chamonix and Geneva airport

Geneva is the local airport for Chamonix.

The ONLY sensible non-driving alternative to flying from Geneva is to get the first lift to La Palud outside Courmayeur, buses (possibly changing in Courmayeur) to Aosta, then trains via Turin (or just possibly Milan)to Venice. This might, just, be possible in the same day. Search Mont Blanc on this forum for weblinks to the Aiguille du Midi lift system and buses between La Palud, Courmayeur and points SE of Courmayeur. bahn.de for trains

The train travel to somewhere like Martigny and then onward to Venice probably isn't worth discussing since it involves a lot of changes, buses, etc. You could do the Turin route as suggested by Flanner; be scenic and travel-savvy producing for sure.

I tend to agree with Alan an using Easyjet; bear in mind the luggage restrictions.

This route does not connect well by ground. Unless you are a train nut, flying is attractive. The routes through Switzerland is very scenic, however.

Using the current schedule,

All trains = ~10-11hrs whether via Martigny or Torino, 5+ changes.

Buses to Aosta then train = ~10hrs

Bus Chamonix-Aosta = 2hrs (8:45-10:45)

Train Aosta-Venice = 6hrs (12:35-18:40)

Buses to Torino, then train = ~9hrs

Bus Chamonix-Torino = 4.25hrs (8:45-13:00)

Train Torino-Venice = 4hrs (13:37-17:33)

Buses to Milano, then train = ~9hrs

Bus Chamonix-Milano Lampugnano = 5hrs (8:45-13:30)

Take taxi or subway to the Milano Centrale, then

Train Milano-Venice = 2.5rs (15:05-17:40)

Thanks everyone! We looked at bus/train options, but as has been mentioned does not connect well by ground and flying from geneva with easyjet is really quite cheap... 20 euro each (plus luggage etc).
