The longer the better IMO. For longer stays, Lauterbrunnen makes an ideal base as it's a transportation hub of sorts, yet quiet - really easy to get to just about anywhere in the BO from there. We spent a week in a Lauterbrunnen apartment in April, a time of year most people wouldn't consider visiting. It was perfect for us.

I have an entirely too detailed report posted here on Fodor's from that trip if you're interested.

Thanks. Melnq8, will have a look at your report.

As I had mentioned, if I decide to go in summer, snow capped peaks are something I would love to see. (Not much snow in India, unless you go to the Himalayas, which I haven't done yet). It is in this context that I was wondering whether there would be considerably more snow on the peaks in early July as opposed to early August. Of course, the tallest peaks like Jungfrau and Elger will always have some.

I notice that this group that I mentioned before has quite a few apartments and small chalets available for shorter stays in both July and later in September and October - and their site has an excellent map to help locate the places:

http://www.chalet-service.ch/en/about_us.html

I would plan for at least 5 days.
There was lots of snow to see in July...

Thank you, love_travel_Aus. This group does seem to have some affordable accommodation. Will contact them regarding the availability.

There will be snow-capped peaks all summer long, so don't worry about that. My husband and I took a fabulous Alps driving tour the first week of August 2007 and never felt like crowds detracted from the experience. The only problems we encountered were traffic on some of the more famous driving routes, and a logjam of people coming down from the Jungfraujoch at the end of the day (we had to wait about an hour for the train).

You definitely want to watch the weather forecast so that you save the best day for the Jungfraujoch - if you choose to do that trip, which I highly recommend, although it is expensive. You'll be walking in snow up there even in August!

I have never felt safer in Europe than when I was in Switzerland. The Berner Oberland is truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Your family will have a fabulous time!

Thanks for the reply hausfrau. I suppose I will do the Jungfraujoch trip even though is expensive. I don't suppose there will be snow on the Schilthorn in summer.

mukund: we have a picture somewhere of one of our party members standing on the Schiltorn in high heels in snow (mid-July). So there could be snow then.

However, we also did Jungfrauroach in less than glorious weather. Even though the weather had been good (we hiked Wengen to Kleine Scheindigg in total sunshine) and even though we had stayed overnight at Kleine Scheindigg to test things out, our way up to Jungfrauroch was fogged in. Nevertheless, we played up at the top of Jungfrauroch doing a bunch of things, and then all of sudden, everything cleared.

So...

AlessandraZoe, thanks for your inputs. Seems I have to keep my fingers crossed regarding the weather!

I can't say when would be good time to visit Switzerland. We had a flexible travel schedule this year (2010) and watched the weather forecast starting in April. It was rainy and cloudy through April, then May, then early June. We ended up going the second and third week in June, but despite a forecast for good weather, it still turned out to be overcast, with a little drizzle, and cool. Not a single sunny day the entire trip. Back to Hawaii next time.

Hi, mukund.
Hope you had a great trip to Switzerland. What dates did you choose?
I'm planning to go to the Swiss Alps for a week in summer 2018 with my husband and a five-year-old daughter, and I have the same issue as you had: how to grasp the beauty of the mountains and towns without tourist crowds yet with long and warm days.
I came across some good tips like TripAdvisor Forum (https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopi...itzerland.html), rove.me (https://rove.me/to/switzerland#Jun01-Jul31), and AlpineTraveler (https://alpinetraveler.com/facts/). But I'm afraid some of the information is too general...Maybe you could share your experience on the best time to visit Switzerland with a family? Also, did you manage to find a nice and not overpriced accommodation in Wengen or Murren?
Thanks for your help,
Sue

SueBi -

This thread is 10 years old and it's unlikely the OP will be back to respond.

If you haven't already, I suggest you start your own thread - you'll get more responses that way.

Thanks for your comment. I haven't noticed the year of the post...well, you are right, quite a lot of things could've changed since 2010
I'll follow your advice and start a new thread. Thank you for help!

Climate change has changed things perhaps in just 10 years?
