My Husband and I are going to Paris in the Fall and would like to know where the best place to stay in Paris. We like relaxed areas, but also like to have fun and don't want to be too far away from the party. Suggestions?

You're never too far away in Paris as the metro system is excellent. My daughter is staying in the Grenelle/St Charles area right now and loves it, as we did.

It depends on how much time you have, what you plan to see and do, and budget. September and October get pretty pricey from what I've heard.

When in the fall. If your timing coincides with Fashion Week...then I'd suggest a wee bit out of the main hub.
We were in Paris the week of, and even our Hotel in the 17th had fashion people and their racks of clothing in it.

If I were young and a partier, I'd probably go towards the upper Marais and the REpublique. Your budget is NICE!

To expand the point about Metro stations, any hotel within a quick walk from a Metro has an advantage. If the station happens to be served by two separate lines, that's a distinct advantage in getting to whatever attraction you seek. I think the Metro is more important than the arrondisment itself although the outer stations of central Paris will force longer rides so the hotel rates may be cheaper.
As a bonus, the stations tend to be at the centre of neighbourhoods with other services clustered there too.

I have stayed in the 15th in the area suggested by CLark Griswold and I really wouldn't suggest it for you as it isn't a party place, that's for sure. There also aren't that many good hotels in that area. YOu have 1200 euros to spend on 4 hotel nights? Are you kidding, that's 300 euros a night and a very generous hotel budget. You could stay almost anywhere you wanted, unless you expect huge suites for that. Even the pricey 3 or 4* hotels in St Germain are perhaps possible.

I find sueciv's experience very unusual, it must have been some hotel particularly chic or desirable by the fashion trade (and the 17th is very near the Arc in one area). I've been there at that time and no fashion people were staying in the hotels I do, that's for sure. No fashion people with racks of clothing would stay in small modest hotels. Of course you aren't going modest, but I'm just saying I don't think it's a problem unless you stay in some places noted by them (and some in St Germain are, like the Lenox).

I bet you'd like St Germain or the Marais -- Oberkampf maybe but I'm not sure there are that many great hotels there.

I loved staying at the relaid du louvre. It is in a great location-- walking distance to Notre Dame, the Louvre, the Seine. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly. Nice safe place and relatively inexpensive.

You can do very nicely in the 6th Arrondissement for that amount.

I'd suggest that you stay at the Bonaparte, but it is well below your budget.

Actually, the best place to stay in Paris (IMO) is either in your penthouse overlooking the Seine or in your townhouse that backs onto the Parc Monceau.

We love the 6th and can recommend Hotel Louis II or Hotel de Fleurie. Louis Ii is on this odd covergence of corners and we have always loved. Lots of small restaurants around it and two of my favorite places for pastries and sweets (Gerard Mulot, Un Dimanche a Paris). The Odeon metro and bus stations are steps away, so it is easy to get anywhere. Many favorite sites are also an easy walk from the area. Also, Relais St Germain is right there, nice but may be more than you want to spend. Worth checking into.

Just spent a week in Paris, staying in the 6e (St Germain), but in a small rental apartment. We never had to walk more than 5 minutes to find "the party" with loads and loads of dining options. The Louvre and Notre Dame were both within an easy stroll of 10-15 minutes. We would definitely return to this area on a future Paris trip.

We like Hotel des Grandes Ecoles in the 5e, close to the Pantheon and Luxembourg Gardens. It's well within your budget and a great location IMO.
