We will be in Munich in August after a river cruise. We would like to see Neuschwanstein Castle. I really wanted to do the Fat Tire Bike Tour as I have taken other tours with them in Europe and loved it, but it has been cancelled. Don't know why, just know it isn't available anymore. I know there is some construction at the castle, not sure how much will still be going on , but I'd like to go anyway.
Can anyone reccomend a particular tour they have taken? Or have you rented a car and done it yourself? All your info would be welcome! Thanks!

It's quite easy to do on your own, and you don't need ro rent a car. Just take the train to Füssen, then hop on the bus to go up to the castles. I would do it on my own so you can determine yourself how long you want to stay there or how much time to spend in Füssen. Füssen is a lovely little town, with an interesting old town, a river that runs next to it, and a large lake just outside of town.

I'd second swandav's recommendation.

Of course, you can rent a car and do the tour yourself.
But you have to take into account the time you need to get from your hotel to the pick-up location, get rental paperwork done, and time to leave Munich in the morning rush hour (unless your trip would be Sat or Sun). Even though Munich looks like a rather small old town in the pictures, the city has 1.3 million inhabitants, and even though you will be driving against the major flow of traffic, driving out of Munich (and later back into Munich) will waste some time. The drive to Neuschwanstein isn't challenging, but mostly on 2-lane federal highways. So, again, it will take/waste some time.

For some trips I would suggest to rent a car. Or the car would be the only option to do a certain itinerary in one day, e.g. with sights included that are not easily reached with public transport. But for just a day trip to Neuschwanstein, the train+bus combo is the best, IMO.

Take a look at Mike's Bike Tours. When we were in Munich we used them for this. The bus picks you up in Munich and then you do a bike ride to Swan Lake. It is a nice easy ride and we loved it. I was hesitant thinking that my husband would say it was cheesy, but he loved it as well. We had our adult kids with us, and we all had a great time. There were people of all ages, including some older ones that had not been on a bike in decades. Anyway, really fun! Then we went to a restaurant for lunch, but did not have to sit as a group or order off a special menu. Then we headed towards the castle. Walked up to Mary's Bridge and then did the castle tour before taking their bus back to Munich. I highly recommend this!

euro18, you are welcome It was a great day! We enjoyed it so much that on another day in Munich we went to Mike's and just rented bikes for the day and rode all over the English Garden, from one end to the other and even past it, then back. I would love to hear how your trip goes
