The drive is only @ 100km or 1 1/2 hours (see ViaMichelin.com). The area is rolling hills and should be pretty scenery in late June.
Just on the other side of Fussen you will find a number of scenic stops (Wiesekirche, Oberammergau, Ettal Monastary, Schoss Linderhof, Garmish, etc)

Yes, we will have come from the Meersburg/Lindau area, going to the Fussen area for a couple of nights before we go on to Hallstatt (thru Mittenwald and Innsbruck). Also hoping to find some fun luges for the kids along the way.

One of the best luge rides is right outside Fussen (near Reutte). Near Lermoos (which also has transport to the top of the Zugspitze, from the Austrian side) there are two Sommerrodelbahns (luge rides). They are really fun.
When I got on one in Switzerland the girl who was helping everyone get set up said is a matter-of-fact voice, "if you go too fast you will fall off the track." No big warning, just physics.
The Ehrenberg castle (acutally three castles) ruins are also a mile outside Reutte.

Hi L,
You might want to consider going via Wertach and Immenstadt, along the Deusche Alpenstrasse. About 2 hr.
