Best jacket for Jan Iceland trip

Hello Everyone,

I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. I am going to Iceland early January and am having a really hard time deciding what to bring in terms of a jacket. I live in Toronto so I am no stranger to the cold. Day to day I wear a Canada Goose parka. Now, in my research I have read that some people bring their parkas ( heavier coats for the cold) and then some prefer/suggest layering (base, midlayer and hard shell for the rain). I'm really conflicted. I generally run cold but I know the weather in Iceland is temperamental and it is wise to bring a waterproof shell of some sort but my CG is not fully waterproof. Also, I am doing a few days of glacier hiking and spending the majority of my time exploring south Iceland so perhaps layering is best? Does anyone have any suggestions? Would a waterproof ski coat be a good option? What kind of jacket etc has been worn while exploring Iceland in the winter months?

Thanks!

Steph

Iceland weather is indeed unpredictable. Expect wind, cold, snow, if warm enough rain, and of course some glorious sunshine. To me that means layering and a waterproof jacket AND waterproof trousers are musts. The goose down is great but not as an only outer garment. Since you will be doing some strenuous activity, you will be making your own heat and might want to peel off a layer or two. Of course you will want waterproof boots/shoes. If you are familiar with the older heavy Icelandic wool sweater, know that the ones sold in most shops now are much lighter using fewer twist of wool in the yarn. They are warm, but not as warm as they used to be.
