Agree with Bob. We had a very nice stay.
What is good, if you are coming by train, the hotel is perhaps a few hundred yards down a grade on the left side. All sidewalk.

P.S. I had forgotten a pair of pants at the hotel and when we got home, it was waiting for me.

The best hotel in Sorrento is the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria. It is in gardens on a cliff overlooking the water, right off the main square. It has a pool and an elevator down to the marina level. It is also expensive, but you didn't say what your budget is.

IMHO the best hotel in Sorrento is the Excelsior Grand Vittoria. Has a beautiful garden with a great pool and fantastic views and a great location right in the middle of town.
On the chance that you don't mean the "best" hotel - but something else - like moderately priced or ? - can you plaese clarify?

Hotel Delfino http://www.hoteldelfino.com has a private inlet with a big equipped bathing area but also a pool with sea salted water so you can be safer with your kids.
Good base to go and discover even Ischia, Capri and other cities at Amalfi coast

We stayed at the Parco dei Principi in September 2012 and had a fabulous stay. There is a nice breakfast included, beautiful pool and terrace. Right on the cliff facing the water, with an elevator down through the cliff to a private beach. Shuttle to town center. Lovely stay!

When we were in Sorrento in 2002, we stayed in Grand Hotel Vesuvio:

It was high on a hill but they had a mini bus to take everyone to a square in Sorrento that was an easy walk to train station. We took a cab from train station to the hotel when we arrived. I don't know if they will arrange to meet you.
It had a pool, billards room, bar, and restaurant. The view was stunning. As I mentioned, it was in 2002 so I don't know how/if things have changed significantly.
Have a great trip!

Bellevue Syrene is amazing and one of my favorite hotel stays ever, in my entire life. However, I probably wouldn't recommend it for kids. There is no pool -- just a dock with access to the water. Thinking back, I don't think I could touch the bottom when swimming off the dock, so it would probably be too deep for 7 to 10 yr olds to swim in, unless you put them in life jackets and supervised them carefully. The hotel in general also has a quieter, more adult vibe.

Was just there this past summer with ours kids.
Hilton Sorrento Palace has quad room (limited view, but affordable). Decent rooms.
Had my kids' favorite pool of all time. 5 level "infinity" pool with views of bay/Mt Vesuvius. Great breakfast buffet as well.
Worth the short hike uphill & worthwhile since a lot of the Amalfi Coast isn't kid's favorite type of thing.
