Best Fish and Chips in London

Hello all,
Will be in London this October and I would love to eat one or two meals of fish and chips. On my last visit I had some on Oxford st. and it was horrible. Any recommendations?

Thanks

We always make a point of having dinner at the North Sea Fish Restaurant because it's superb. A little pricey, perhaps, but you get what you pay for.

It's on Leigh Street, a couple blocks east of the British Museum.

We loved Rock and Sole Plaice, just off Covent Garden...
got the recommendation from this article.

I don't know how to properly add the link, so just click on the second-half of the link above. (after the > mark).

One of my favorites has always been The Seashell in Lisson Grove.

Fryers Delight in Holborn or the place under the bridge at the back of Waterloo Station (name escapes me).

Someone is bund to recommend Geales. Ignore them. It's been taken over by a couple of Notting Hill trustafarians and they've ruined it.

Costas' just along from Geales is good though.

I used to hang out with some trust-fund-hippies; maybe they've become restauranteurs.

Best fish and chips I ever had was at the Rock and Sole mentioned above by my wife.

It is a little place with several tables upstairs and about 5 more in a little room in the basement. You have to squeeze past the cooking area to get to the basement. The downstairs is painted in a seaside theme. If I remember I ordered the large cod platter and a pint to sip. You get a huge piece of fish and a generous portion of chips. It was delicious. Definitely the place to go if you are a fish and chips aficionado.

I agree with the North Sea and Rock and Sole Plaice recommendations.

R&S, though, ran my credit card with dollar charges rather than pound, without asking, and then said their machine couldn't make a correction. At my protest, they did correct it by reversing the charge, but I then had to pay them in cash. At our hotel, the manager said it is illegal to do that without asking. It was a small amount of money, but the principle is wrong (and to their advantage).

The Yatch at Greenwich does good fish and chips, and you can watch the river boats go by.

My favourite also used to be the Seashell in Lisson Grove but the last time we went it was disappointing.

try the Golden Hinde, just off the high street in Marylebone - very small, good portions. you can also take in wine or beer and they will provide the glasses - good people!

I was so disappointed that Geales changed ownership. It used to be another of my favorites. I don't know about the quality, but the portion size and prices have definitely changed. I think I counted 8 chips in a tiny glass on their website (showing the fish and chip plate).

I loved the Sticky Toffee Pudding that the old Geale's had. Can anyone recommend a good place for that particular dessert?

I also agree with the comment about Costa's being good.

I'm certainly no expert, but I love the Sticky Toffee Pudding at Brown's Restaurant on St. Martin's Lane.
