Just casual observations:

Forget the beach. You want beach? Got to the Jersey Shore. Going to Europe for the first time to sit on a beach is a waste.

I'd concentrate on one city, with maybe a day trip here or there. Of course, Paris, Rome and London are expensive, but you can figure out how to economize if you do some homework and planning. It being summer, I might rule out Rome and especially southern Italy.

"Food" and "shopping" may be at odds with "limited budget." But I haven't been to Greece in 20 years, so maybe they go together there.

Re day trips: They, too, can be done inexpensively if you plan. For instance, and not that you necessarily would do this exactly, a day trip out of Paris to Versailles can be done by taking the train back and forth and getting tix ahead of time.

Well I have never been to the Jersey shore - it must not be as I conceive but for years I've seen comments about not going to the beach in Europe - I wish I had gone to some of the beaches earlier in my travel days.

There is nothing in my experience (I've been to numerous Florida and other beaches in the south, and a few on the west coast) that is the same as the European scene. I've been to Capri, Nice, Naxos, Rhodes, Cinq Terre and maybe a few others - I'VE LOVED THEM ALL. To sit by the water eating fresh caught fish, local wine, renting the chairs and umbrella and watching the Eurotrash , taking ferries along the coast...heaven....is that what the Jersey shore is like? Really? True we usually mix a city and then a beach destination but if these young women like the beach, then spend some of the trip in a locale on the coast or an island. Athens and Naxos?

The museums and crumbles will be there for your more mature years....IMO.

suec: There's a difference between staying at a seaside community and "going to the beach." My point was that going to Europe to sit on a beach isn't the best use of time or money. Here's what I said:
"Going to Europe for the first time to sit on a beach is a waste."

>> To sit by the water eating fresh caught fish, local wine, renting the chairs and umbrella and watching the Eurotrash .....is that what the Jersey shore is like?<<

As a matter of fact, that's exactly what it's like, but with less Eurotrash.

My vote: Athens and either Naxos or Paros

In Mid-June ON a beautiful Greek Island Beach (and not an isolated beach where u would need a car), you can get a double room with a balcony for €40 -- I challenge Italy-lovers or France lovers to match that at twice the price.

Of course Mykonos & Santorini would be higher .. but European teens know that-- and they also know there are scores of other islands with BETTER beaches that can be dirt cheap ... You'll meet lots of young Europeans and have fun, while US travelers are herded to highly-promoted destinations or cruise ships that can only dock in 5 ports.

On my first trip in 99 (not even knowing the budget tips I know now), aside from intrernational airfare, I did 30 days for $1200 -- $40 for Everything, and i denied myself nothing re food, beverages, transport, admissions, souvenirs etc. Today, it would be more like $60, but still a huge bargain compared with the rest of Europe.

PS: I re-read & see you are a NYC person -- I spent 35 years there, now a Philly person ... Greece is great for the sophisticated traveler who likes to be aware of history all around, while at the same time being with Greeks who live a more natural, simple life while surrounded by beauty & history. I loved scenes such as Paros, where the little museum abuts the local highschool and its ball-courts. The museum has so many amazing ancient sacophagi, that they're lined up along the lane -- and that's where the teenagers sit, to flirt, text on their phones, play music etc. It's just part of their daily lfe. Once we went up to a deserted hill to find a ruined Temple of Apollo, but were chased away by a shepherd & his dog -- his flock was grazing in the ruins and he didn't want them disturbed. PLUS: you haven't seen fun till you've been in a Greek taverna full of greeks around midnight, when the guitars & mandolins & bouzoukis really get going.

I went to Greece as a young adult with a bunch of my friends and it was perfect. You guys should go there! It's got nightlife AND history AND good food AND natural beauty. As far as shopping, lots of silver jewelry is what I remember and of course pottery but there's probably a lot more.

I bought my favorite white linen shirt very inexpensively on a Greek island. And a very nice folding knife I use to this day when I travel. Shopping is most satisfying, I think, when we aren't hoping for particular things.
