Best Budget Dining in Lucerne

We will be in Lucerne for 1 day and two nights and I was wondering if you can suggest your favorite places to dine that aren't very expensive.

Thanks!

Hello sandicran, and welcome to Fodor's!

There's a grocery store in the pedestrian/shopping area that has a deli which has some fairly decent cooked foods. Not sure they're open for dinner, though. You can also put together a nice picnic from the store, then eat on a bench on the lakeside promenade.

It's difficult to recommend restaurants without knowing what you mean by "<i>aren't very expensive</i>." Do you have a particular budget in mind?

Happy travels!

An inexpensive microbrewery and restaurant with hearty dishes is the Rathaus Brauerei.

But if you are looking for a cheap, stand-up eatery, just walk through Grendelstraße and Weggisgasse and look right and left.

There are several Asian fast food places, e.g. in Maihofstraße and Haldenstraße.

There is also an eatery called "New York Food Company" (Pilatusstraße) which serves inexpensive American-style junk food like burgers, sandwiches and pizza.

Manor's Cafeteria on its top floor is relatively inexpensive, offers a large selection and has a small but very scenic rooftop terrace.

In 2003, we ate a pizza at "New York Food Company" and it was a dry stale mess, I believe it was sitting under a hot lamp.

Those grocery store delis are usually good, esp. if you can fix up a 'room' or outdoors picnic.

Otherwise we had one restaurant dinner in a French restaurant that was decent/good, not 'cheap' but not expensive either. I think it was Brasserie/Chez Bodu, Kornmarkt 5, old town.

Thanks for the replies.

I guess I should have specified that I would like a traditional meal in a nice place that's not too expensive.

Maybe "budget" has the wrong connotation.

Oh, and we're going at end of December so we probably would want to eat inside, burrrrr.

Then, the Rathaus Brauerei would be my first choice. Wirtshaus Galliker the second choice.

I would have gone to Wirtshaus Galliker but it seems they are closed on Sunday and Monday, the two nights we will be in Lucerne!
