Best Area for Hotel in Amsterdam
We are visiting Amsterdam for 3 days on April 16. I have been in Amsterdam only once before for a day visit. Any suggestions as to which part of the city would make the best base? For that matter, any hotel suggestions? We would be willing to spend between $200 & $250 per night.

the city is pretty small so it's not very important where you stay. Try www.nh-hotels.nl or just google Centrum, Zuid and Museum quartier are all fine.

I'd suggest the Leidseplein area as an ideal location. You are just a few steps from the best places to stroll and to shop and to eat -- the Vondelpark, Jordaan, the 9 straatjes, and the Leidseplein itself. Easy access to the museum quarter either on foot or tram.
There are several hotels in your price range - the NH Amsterdam Centre (but not the NH City Centre), the Marriott, or the American, for example.
I prefer to avoid the station area. It's the only section of the city that I find to be a bit too grimy.

I agree with the post above near Vondel Park. We stayed at the Fita Hotel more like a Band B which we liked. A great breakfast. Van Gogh Musem and the park at the back of the hotel. On a quiet street and tram nearby. The canal boat within a few block.

lizjc, that's a good web site.
rizzuto, I totally agree.
Check out the Owl Hotel. Don't ask how long it to get there, at the reception desk, because they will say "how do you walk?". Good dry Dutch humor.
It's about a 5 minute walk one way to the Leidesplein, and less than 10 minutes the other way to the Museumplein, where the Van Gogh is located.
Along the way is the 'mini rodeo drive' of Venice and a great rice table restaurant, Sama Sebo. There is also an underground 'supermarket' on the way to Van Gogh.
