I have been using http://nanika.net/Metro which covers a number of cities. I find it very useful and it is free.

I have London tube for the underground and their add-in for bus routes, an additional 99 cents. I love it. In addition to the maps, it has updates on delays on various lines, problems at individual stops, like escalator service out, etc. You can set it to get push notifications of a variety of things.
I chose it by looking at the reatings of the various tube map apps on the App Store site.

Safe travels.

cheers,
Gittel

The best free app I've found so far (which covers public transport in cities all over the world) is MetrO. Would be interested in other app. reccommendations for Paris or London (the Louvre has a pretty nice free app too).

Here's another huge recommendation for MetrO. I love it for the Paris bus routes.

I think MetrO starts with subway routes and adds bus routes for some cities. I have a city called "London City (test)" which appears to include bus routes (but has fewer destinations than the "London tourist" city, and is not listed on their website).

Thanks so much for the help for bus and metro.
Are there apps for restaurants similar to Urban spoon or yelp in New York?

I don't have a restaurant app to suggest, but I found "escargo", which is a food/menu translator app., to be very handy.

Make sure you turn of International Data Roaming or you could be shocked with charges.

You have to find an app. which doesn't require a data connection. Unless you can find Wifi while you're at a metro or Tube station.

MetrO was good for me in Madrid, helped me find the optimal path using a combination of the Metro and the suburban commuter train (name escapes me now). So it's able to work without doing live queries to a server over the Internet like a lot of apps. Necessary for avoiding data roaming.
