Berchtesgaden Hotels/B&Bs
I will be spending three or four nights in berchtesgaden/Obersalzberg/ this May and would like some updated information on a good Hotel or B&B in town. Preferably one with a great view. I have searched Fodor's but some of the info is very old (2000).
I couple that seem to be mentioned often are the Hotel Baveria and Hotel Wittelsbach. The Hotel zum Turken in Obersalzberg also looks interesting but old. It is next to the site of Hitler's Berghof.
Our budget is around 150E/double
Thanks Steve

Hi
When we visited Berchtesgaden a couple of years ago, we decided to stay right outside of town. We found the Hotel Brennerbascht in Bischofswiesen it is on the main road and only about 10 minutes away. It was authentically Bavarian and served a good breakfast. Most of the guests were German and the owners English was limited, but very friendly.. If I remember correctly we paid about 75 eu for the room. We did not like most of the hotels we saw.

We spent 3 nights at the Hotel Wittelsbach in September. Loved the hotel and the friendly owner and staff. Great breakfast and location. Can't say much about the view per se, but I'd definitely stay there again. We had a small sitting area adjacent to our bedroom with a nice size bathroom and paid 84E.

In your post, you stated that you will be visitng B'gaden and the Obersalzberg, but you asked for a hotel in town.
The Hotel Bavaria is on the outskirts of town and you can walk to everything. The Hotel Wittlesbach is in the center of town and is the nicer of the 2 properties.
The zum Turken is located half way up the Obersalzberg, just below the parking area for the busses to reach the Eagle's Nest. It is more of a B and B, but is run by a lovely, English speaking Frau Scarfenberg.
If you want to stay in town, that is, in the center of Berchtesgaden, the zum Turken is not the right choice. If you will have a car, then there are better options. If I had to stay in town, I would pick the "Hotel Post" or the Hotel Vier-Jahrezeitin . Both are centrally located and you can walk to everything in town.
Can you tell us if you will have a car?

We are driving so hotels just out of town would be fine assuming there is parking in the center or the hotel is within walking distance.
BettyK... unfortunately the Hotel Wittelsbach is fully booked for these dates (Mid May, 08) but that would have been a great place to stay. They did recommend the Hotel Vier-Jahrezeitin though.

Hi,
For a B & B close to Berchtesgaden (10 min. away) we stayed 4 nights Oct./Nov. '07 and 3 nights Oct. '06 in Ramsau at the Mayringerlehen. The owners are fantastic, buffet breakfast is very good, their south facing rooms are large, have great Alp views and are less than half the price of you're budget. Excellent bakery right across the street also.

In 2004 we stayed at the Hotel Floriani which is near the train station and tourist office. Check out
www.hotel-floriani.de
Very clean place, quite friendly and about 70 euros/night for room which had separate bedroom with balcony, sitting room with balcony, WC and small refrigerator.
Everything in Berchtesgaden is within walking distance including the salt works.

We stayed at the Hotel Schiffmeister at the Konigsee earlier this year. We had a lovely stay: gorgeous view, very nice room with a balcony overlooking the lake.
We highly recommend this hotel if you are visiting the Berchtesgaden area.

Thanks for all the great info guys. I managed to get a junior suite at the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten with deck and mountain view for 127 euro (2 persons). Was leaning towards the Hotel zum Turken just because of the history but she doesn't take reservations until mid March.

It has been a few years, but I remember the food at Vier Jahrezeiten was very good. It's a much better location than the Hotel zum Turken in my opinion. Although the Turken used to have (may still have?) a bunker that you could go down into for a look, that's no reason to stay there!
I hope you enjoy Berchtesgaden.
