The latest in the ever increasing list of food/drink scandals in Belgium:<BR><BR>"Federal police have uncovered a scam involving Belgian beer. Thousands of litres of beer from the Czech Republic were sold in pubs under a Belgian brand label. Sources suggest that empty kegs of Belgian beer were taken to the Czech Republic, where they were filled with local pilsner in a brewery south of the capital Prague. On the way back, the caps were replaced with those belonging to a leading Belgian brand, reportedly Jupiler. The fraud centred on pubs in the Brussels borough of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean/Sint-Jans-Molenbeek. Federal police have now uncovered a storage depot in Haren, also in Brussels."<BR><BR>I guess this is a tax issue more than anything else, because a Czech pilsner is probably BETTER than Jupiler!<BR><BR>BTilke (Brussels)<BR>

Czech pilsner IS the BEST.

I have to agree. Sounds like the Belgians are on to a smart move. Jupiler is the only bad beer to come out of Belgo-land whereas Czech pils is the business. Long may the scam continue!

Stellla Artois is a pretty darned good Belgian pilsner. They do not need to scam that beer, it's great!<BR><BR>US

Spent 5 years in Belgium, and Stella Artois is not a great Belgium beer -- in fact, it is basically called a working man's beer (not that there is anything wrong with working men).<BR><BR>I'll go for a good Czech Pilsner anyday, but prefer the German Bavarian beers the best.

Are you talking about the one near the Hauptbahnhof?<BR><BR>If you look straight at the Hauptbahnhof from the stachus and then go to the right side of the HBF and straight up that street the Augustinerbrau garden is about three or four blocks up the street at the top of a little rise. You enter through a little gate on the right and voilla...beer heaven!<BR><BR>No tourists, just German locals drikning really good beer under the large trees. Pretty good food as well.<BR><BR>Is that the one?<BR><BR>US

Flygirl,<BR><BR>Next month may mean Octoberfest!?<BR><BR>Octoberfest is one of the reasons we went to the Auhustinerbrau Gardens. In 1999, we were there for business and went to the opening day parade. By the time we got to the Octoberfest all the seats were taken at every tent.<BR><BR>We wandered around, bought the obligatory tee shirt, in fact I have it on now, and then bailed out. We first went to the Seehaus in the Englisher Gartens for a couple of beers( a great place to drink beer by the way) and then took a taxi to the Augustinerbrau Gardens for dinner and more beer.<BR><BR>IMHO, both the Seehaus and the Augustinerbrau Gardens are tops!<BR><BR>US

Great, hope you enjoy it. If you run inot a real crowding problem, try either the Seehaus or the Augustinerbrau Gardens and for really great German food try the Konighof.<BR><BR>Also for a really nice French restaurant try the Werneckhof on Werneckhof Strasse. Great food and a very nice wine selection. It is located near the Englisher Gartens near one of the exits near the Seehaus. BTW, you can rent a bike in the Englisher Gartens and wander Munich on a nice sunny day. <BR><BR>US
