Beer at Oktoberfest?
September will be our first visit to Oktoberfest ~ can someone advise how to get an Amber beer there?
In the U.S. it’s easy to just ask “do you have a Red or Amber on tap?” but I need a little help for Munich.
Thanks for any guidance 🇩🇪🍺

I will be surprised if any of the tents serve an amber/red tbh. They keep it pretty traditional with serving their main lagers and hefeweisens, depending on the tent. There are strict rules around beer types served.
Edit: https://www.oktoberfest.de/en/magazi...at-oktoberfest perhaps research the breweries that will be there and see if they have a red beer. But you may have to go outside the festival to get one.

I guess it depends on what you understand by the terms Amber and red.
Red to me is an Irish Ale, whilst Amber is a lager.
Mrzen and Bock may suit your tastes, or even a dunkel. Be aware German beer can be much stronger than US beer!
But why not just be adventurous and try a few different styles. You may surprise yourself.

Its been years since I've been to Oktoberfest but I tend to agree withTravel_Nerd. In the tents they are all about the masses and serving fast. Not a lot of options IIRC. If you are picky about red/brown ales (I prefer dark chewy beer myself
) it may have to be at other times when you are in pubs/bars away from the festival grounds.

We will also be there in September for 5 nights!
Maybe I will become a beer aficionada!!
Surely there will be many people who understand English in the tents and elsewhere!
Where are you staying? You could ask your hotel for the proper nomenclature, if you wish........English should be very widely spoken I Munich, as I recall from a hundred years ago!
My last visit was during the '72 Olympics when I stayed with a friend at the Olympic Village....not the best time to have been in Munich but I am so looking forward to returning next month.
Are restaurants important to you? If so, I compiled a pretty good list, I think, and have booked for two dinners already......lovely and kind responses from the restaurant staff........quite happy to be going!!

Maybe this primer will help you work out what kind of beer you want to order:

Many thanks for these suggestions ~ I’m sure we’ll do fine.
Hetii, I’ve spent decades tasting my adventurous spouse’s beer choices and always prefer things like Irish Ale.
Anything but a dreaded pale Pilsner or light. Thank you.
Janis, thought ‘chewy’ might be a surprising typo but Google educated me - who knew?
Eks, thanks for theMunich reminder - what a great film but how remarkable for you to be there - in Olympic Village! - that Black September.
Re dining, we don’t. We usually lurch from hotel breakfast to late lunch/early dinner.
Again, thanks to all!

Plenty of different styles of beer at the Oktoberfest if you follow the link above. I'm almost tempted to go myself but then again, all those people, nah. I'll stick with our local brewery for now.I'm sure you will find something to your taste there. Have fun!

Thank you to hetismij - Dunkel proved to be the magic word at all the lovely umbrella-ed street establishments.
Oktoberfest itself was a bit overwhelming so we usually popped in for a short visit to see the two big parades, have one traditional bier and then make our escape.
