Hi joannyc, sounds like a great trip.
We have visited the Alsace region twice, love the area.
We hope to visit Annecy also on this trip and stay 2 nights. We will have a car so will need to stay somewhere convenient to park a car. Did you have a car? A hotel recommendation would be good.
Did you start your trip in Annecy? It will be our first stop after coming from Dubrovnik. And then we will move on to Beaune for a week, but hope to maybe catch a train one day to Dijon. Not sure about Lyon. After leaving Beaune we will be driving down through Provence.

I can enthusiastically second the suggestion for jardins de lois in Beaune. We stayed there several years ago and absolutely loved it. It's an easy stroll from the centre of the city, and the hosts are lovely.

Aussie_10, I stayed at this Annecy hotel:
Hotel Splendid
4 Quai Eustache Chappuis
It was fine for the most part. The only thing that turned me off was when I removed the throw at the end of the bed, there was quite a bit of hair on the top sheet. Yuck!!! That just turned me right off.
I didn't have a car while in Annecy. I picked it up when departing there. There is space for about 3 cars or so to pull over in front of the hotel to drop or pick up luggage, etc. They don't have a parking garage/lot that I am aware of but if I recall my research correctly, there is parking very close by.
Yes, I did start my trip in Annecy. I flew into Geneva and took the bus from the airport to Annecy. Loved Annecy!
Have a great time! Your trip sounds excellent, you will be visiting some wonderful areas.

muskoka, jardins de lois does look lovely, thanks for the recommendation.
joannyc, we too are looking at flying into Geneva and thought to pick up a car at the airport, but if its not needed for the Annecy part maybe best to pick it whilst leaving as well.
How long did you have in Annecy, and what did you do.

Aussie_10, it was very easy to take the bus from Geneva airport to Annecy. No sense in paying for an additional few days of car rental and parking if it isn't necessary. When I arrived in Annecy, I took a taxi from the bus to my hotel.
On my last day, I walked to Europcar (reserved through AutoEurope.com) to pick up my rental car before returning to my hotel to pick up my luggage.
I stayed for 3 nights, figuring my first day would be a jet-lagged day. I walked and walked and walked every day taking a slew of photographs! I didn't really do any museums, they didn't get great reviews. I did do a lake cruise.

It looks like we will be changing our itinerary and we will now fly into Lyon and stay in Beaune first and then move on to Annecy. Which will be better as it would be on weekdays. I assume that weekends in July would be very busy in early July.
As we will have a car in Beaune, I will have to decide whether to drive to Annecy and park the car or turn the rental car back in and catch a train to Annecy.
However we will need a car for later in the trip.

Tough decision. Guess it depends on how long you plan to stay in Annecy. And, how much two rentals would cost vs. keeping the original car.
I am somewhat sorry that I didn't wait until leaving Lyon to pick up my car. It sat in a garage for 5 nights while I as there. Car rental and garage costs that were unnecessary. Could have easily taken the bus from Annecy.
