This is a load of crap...
At least here in Norway (and probably all of Scandinavia/Nordics), the hotel doing the suing would have to prove that the writer of the negative review was lying, *and* that their business was significantly harmed due to the negative review. Good luck!
But I guess it's nice for the hotel industry to have stupid scare tactics for stupid people...

It's not hogwash that a hotel manager would do such a thing. A few years ago, after having a bad experience at a supposedly top tier hotel in Europe, I posted about it here. (And I use my own name). Less than 48 hours later, I received a furious phone call from the manager who most definitely DID threaten me personally (not a "friend of a friend" regarding my negative review. And threatened to sue. He was very hostile. Nothing came of it in the end and I did NOT retract my review but it was not a comfortable experience.
