My husband and I will be in Barcelona April 4-11. Will people still be wearing boots or will they have switched to sandals? April seems to be in between seasons. Are most streets and sidewalks paved or cobblestones?

One thing that I always thought was funny in Spain was that Spaniards are pretty specific about making the change to sandals. . . it is very much a season-appropriate thing and April is still a month for close-toed shoes. However, if it is hot, you will for sure see sandals, if not on Spaniards, then on the Spring tourists (you will probably see some wearing white knee socks along with those sandals. . . if you are lucky).

Barcelona is not a cobblestone city, but if it rains, a lot of the walkways are really slick. The Ramblas are hosed down each night and it is treacherous in sandals and heels.

Shoe shop while you are there! There are some great stores up Pelai street (between Catalunya and Universitat. . . heading away from PC, look along your left) and in Plaça Francesc Macià you will find 4 fabulous shoe stores within one city block.

I was there around the same time last year, and found it to be chilly (especially at night). I remember coat and sweater weather. Even during the daytime everyone had these great scarves on! (so- boots- no sandals!) Of course- half of the fun is buying clothes that you may have left behind. Enjoy!

Why does it have to be either boots or sandals? April seems like the time to wear normal shoes to me. If you want light summer shoes, without having open toes, try the ballerina type flats. There are plenty of great and cheap shoe shops in Barcelona, like laclaire said, so if you didn't bring appropriate shoes, just buy some. I just bought a great pair of Camper shoes in Madrid last week.
