Barcelona Hotel Advice

I need advice about Barcelona hotels. We'll be there in August with 2 kids (8 & 10). I'm looking for a mid-range hotel with character, in a quiet area near Ramblas. I've read good things about the Sant Agusti and the Atlantis Hotel. Unfortunately, the Regencia Colon and Colon are booked. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

We will be in Barcelona for 2 nights/3 days in July. I booked with the Hotel Continental. It has been highly recommended by Rick Steves and also on this board. Their website is www.hotelcontinental.com

It is at the top of the Ramblas and is supposed to be a great value. If you read Spanish, here is the text of their reply to my request. If you need a translation, email me and I'll translate for you.

www.hotelcontinental.com

One word. Grand Havana. Princess cruises has it on the recommended list, and it is not in the business district. Great location, really nice, but not too expensive.

I'm not sure if Lou An meant the Gran Hotel Havana on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes in Barcelona...I was going to stay there just one night this past week (7/02) we had a change of plans..I had my hotel concierge call to cancel the one night stay 4 days b4 the night in question...it took 2 telephone calls and 2 emails to cancel..they were very nasty and very unhelpfull..even to spanish speaking hotel industry people!! My advice, stay away from this hotel..I'll find out in a few days if they charged anything on my credit card...they said it wasn't possible to cancel without a charge..their cancellation policy says 48-hours..we had 96 hours...
