It might depend on the establishment. When I first went to Barcelona I was interested in eating in one of the waterfront restaurants. When I walked in they told me, "we don't even open until 9[PM]" so yes, you can eat late as they do in Madrid. However I've eaten earlier at some places.

Most kitchens open at 9 and close around midnight or just earlier. 10pm is the typical dinner time here.

If most folks are eating dinner at 10 pm, at what time do they start work and school in the morning?

Do folks eat that late in their homes also?

We always ate dinner at home in Alicante at 9:30 and my little sister and I were in bed by 10:30. We both had school at 8 a.m. the next day and we all (parents included) took naps from 3:30-5. Now I normally eat at 10, which is pretty par for the course for families without little kids.

People uses to eat late at restaurants and on weekends. Here in Castellon which is an industrial zone, most people begins working at 6 AM, so they go to bed early and have dinner around 8:30 PM or 9 PM. Very few people goes to restaurants on weekdays except business people. Schools, as Claire said, begin at 8 AM

Okay, so with that knowledge I shouldn't feel guilty about feeding my family at 9 pm, after everyone gets home from all of their activities! Of course, the problem is the quantity of homework that keeps them up past midnight. (And no afternoon nap!)

I think that my family will adapt to the late dinner hour in Barcelona very nicely. We got into it easily as tourists in Rome - we toured all day, then came back in the late afternoon for naps/rest, then went to dinner at abot 10 pm. (Of course, when we tried that in Venice, almost nothing was open!)
