If Madrid follows through on its threat to impose direct rule and new elections on the Catalan people - and it is giving no indication of willingness to compromise -- whatever past experience of protests tourists had in Barcelona, even if just a week ago, is no indication of what will happen between now and when those elections take place. Everyone hopes this will be a peaceful path for the region-- but the odds are actually long. Radial rupture in Catalonia is more likely to bring disruption of services, public space, conflict with police authority, etc.

Well, I leave Thursday for Spain with Barcelona at the back end...well that was the plan until an hour ago. I have decided that I don't want the uncertainties of a city hanging over my trip, so have now cancelled Barcelona apartment, booked one in Valencia and also an airport hotel within walking distance of BCN for the night before flight home. When Alsa bus website decides to work again, then I'll review bus options. Those seem easier to book and use with short notice than the train. If airports are affected, then I can at least get to Madrid for return flight. My Plan B is now my Plan A.

I just looked at Alsa without any problem. The problem is your arriving at noon as there are several bus trips to Valencia in the morning, but you probably can't make the one at 12:55, so then the next one isn't until 7:25 pm, arriving almost midnight. Costs 29 euro.
I think someone said there were trains from the airport to Valencia but I don't think the BCN airport has a train station, at least not long distance trains. You have to take the Airtrain to Sants train station I thought, which isn't too hard. There are trains from Sants to Valencia at 2:30 pm, 3 pm and 3:30 pm, 30-45 euro. Train takes about 3:30 hrs, not much less than the bus.
YOu could also fly on Iberia at 2:20 pm for 119 euro.

Well, not sure what isn't working for me, but have tried IE and Firefox, and though I can get onto the site, it won't give scheduling or reservation options for Madrid to Valencia...which is what I am working on solving at the moment. It says there is a problem.

Ah, I guess the problem is that Alsa doesn't run a Madrid to Valencia route. I can however, book Valencia to Bcn Airport-Prat TI. Numerous times a day 30E no stops 4 hours. So, train to Valencia and bus to BCN.
