My wife and I are travelling to Barcelona in may next year for a week. Can someone recommend which part of Barcelona I should book our hotel in? We are flying in and will not be renting a vehicle. If you would be so kind, please recommend a hotel as well that has a roof top pool/patio. Thanks to all.

What is your budget? I was just there at the end of September and stayed at the Hotel Jazz which I really liked. Great central location and nice hotel, but moderately priced. I know it has a rooftop terrace, not sure about the pool as it wasn't that warm when I was there, but check. A lot of the nicer hotels have that. It was a very good rate compared to a lot of them, also (Barcelona hotels are not cheap).

I agree with Christina's recommendation of Hotel Jazz. We stayed there several years ago when it was newly opened and loved the hotel and the location. It does have a roof top pool. Last year we stayed in an apartment on the Rambla Catalunya, just a little further from the centre than Hotel Jazz but also a nice location. If you consider an apartment, look at habitatapartments.com

I used to live in Barcelona, and the Eixample is my favourite neighbourhood. Passeig de Gracia is a particularly nice street that runs from 'Upper Barcelona' (near Mount Tibidabo) to the centre of town (Placa Catalunya). If you stay on or near Passeig de Gracia, you will be close to most everything you would like to see and also the city's best shopping and restaurants. From there, it will be easy to get the metro lines that you are most likely to need (Barcelona has very good public transportation). At the Passeig de Gracia metro stop, you can pick up the green metro line, which takes you to Sants Estacio--where your train from BCN Airport will bring you. I am personally not a huge fan of La Rambla--it's very touristy and can be full of pick-pockets. While I personally wouldn't book a hotel there, it is an interesting street to walk--especially if it's your first time in Barcelona--to see a wide variety of people and street performers. Avoid staying in the Raval at all costs. While it has been undergoing a bit of a renaissance, it is still one of the dodgier sections of town.

I would not recommend staying on Rambla or in Raval.
Near Catalunya ( a bit north) is most central

I think you will have to sacrifice with that budget. Barcelona hotels are not cheap. That is only around 140 euro. I suppose it depends when you are going, the rates I saw were in early October and had dropped a lot from the end of September, which is one reason I changed my trip dates (Barcelona has a big national festival around Sept 24th and hotel rates were really high then). I didn't see anything around 140 euro that I would want to say in, but I wasn't looking for super cheap. Hotel Jazz was considerably cheaper than alternative hotels I was considering, and it was still around 150 euro for a small double room, I think. Not sure, you'd need to check, it might be possible for what you want depending on dates.

Most of the hotels I looked at were a lot more expensive than that, I was looking at 3-4* hotels from Maribel's guide, also.

My not be what you wish, but for 140 euros a day one can rent a very nice apt.
