Baggage storage at German and Swiss train station
Anyone who has used the baggage storage facilities at German and Swiss train stations, can you please advise on cost, is it a per bag fee, etc? Also,, are there usually lockers or is it a desk that you leave the bags at. How long can they be stored? Thanks in advance for the info.

Germany: Usually there are lockers. The price is from € 1,50 to € 3 for 24 hours per locker, depending on the size of the locker. Maximum store: 72 hours.
A few big-city stations may have desks - I know there is one at Munich central station - but usually it's lockers only.

Most, if not all, of the lockers are of the modern type where, if you exceed the normal period (24 hours or 72 hours), you have to put more money in to recover your bags. Always check carefully what times the station is open. Access to the lockers may not be possible if the station is locked at night. The lockers are periodically emptied, and baggage which has been left for longer than the specified period is treated as lost property, so will be kept for a time (three months?) then sold or destroyed.

> Switzerland, with locker prices varying between 2 and 5 Fr ...
CHF2 ? Nowadays the smallest ones seem to cost CHF4 at usuall SBB/CFF stations but surpisingly that's much cheaper than minimum €4 lockers at SNCF stations in France.

There are several sorts of lockers. Some have simple keys. Some give you a ticket with a five-digit number which you need to type to retrieve your luggage. Some give you a ticket with a bar code which you need to flash in front of a reader to get your bags back. I can't remember whether all these are used in Germany and Switzerland. What's important is that lockers are widely available in these countries, whereas in the UK, lockers have been removed from stations for "security" reasons and only a few big stations have manual left luggage offices, usually charging outrageous prices.

Some smaller stations still have CHF 2 lockers - surprised me too when I saw them in Glarus. Don't think you find these in Zürich or Geneva.
