B and B/Hotel in Amsterdam
I know NOTHING about Amsterdam and am looking for a B/B or Hotel while traveling with my 14 year old niece. Prefer to walk most everywhere...unsure about neighborhood locations......looking for a place that has some interest....history, etc. Suggestions appreciated! Not sure where to start! Thanks

I do recommend where we stayed with friends...Movenpick not far from Central Station where you can get trams. Others will have other places no doubt but maybe Movenpick Hotel is a bit more coventional (safer?)

Budget? Well........I'm not sure! We will be on our way back from Africa...just a quick 3 day layover in Feb to sightsee....I suppose we are looking at $250 a night???? That would be great I guess.....possible? Would like some place safe/interesting/I used the word "charming" once on this forum and got nailed big time....but.......you get the picture. Trying to create a memory/experience for my niece!

There are a number of suggestions on this thread:

We are also staying in Ams., but for three days before Africa. We chose the Etherea but also considered the Edon Hotel Rembrandt, the Hotel Orlando, the Golden Tulip, Hotel Nes, and Hotel Residence le Coin, which has kitchenettes. The Ambassade looks very nice, but a bit more pricey. Boutique hotels rooms can be very small and most in the old buildings have no elevators and extremely steep stairs.

I love this site for finding B&B's in Netherlands.
http://www.bedandbreakfast.nl
I like finding the places by area on the map. On the first page scroll down to the area map, choose the Amsterdam area and it shows B&B's on the map.
For atmosphere and history I think the area along the 3 canals, Jordan and around Vondelpark are the nicest.

We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Hestia. It is very centrally located and you can walk to many places. It also offers good transportation options. The Van Gogh and Rijk museums are just a few blocks away and it sits right on the edge of Vondel Park
