There has been much discussion about visiting Cornwall in the summer. How are the months of September and October?

We've been there in September, in fact in 2002, and had a great time. Some rain but most days it was quite warm. We didn't find the gardens as lovely as when I went with my mom in May, but of course everything is still very green. I would agree with not attempting Cornwall in August, that's when all the English are on holiday there and the driving can be a bit cozy. Did come across another site that has lovely villas/cottages to rent in Cornwall at http://www.holiday-rentals.com/
Athena or Scarlett - need anyone to carry your luggage?

Athena - just one more comment about self catering: I often find I meet MORE people that way than when staying in traditional B&Bs. In a B&B, your acquaintances are really limited to the landlord/family and any other paying guests.

When you rent in a village for a week you meet the greengrocer, butchers, everybody at the pubs, the next door neighbors, news agent, school kids, local vicar just a LOT more people than you'd meet in a day or two staying in a B&B.

I have kept in touch with MANY village folks I've met over the years . . .

Alas, it will be awhile before I can profit from some of these great posts, but I'm heading to the library ASAP for a copy of The Shell Seekers. Any more recommendations? J.

I want you all to know that I was persuaded by your arguments in favor of self-catering. Alas! It is not possible. Our seven days begin on a Monday, and we would have to leave the cottage on Sunday to get back to Gatwick in time for our flight back to Dallas on Monday. It appears that all the rentals begin and end on a Saturday or a Sunday.

Once I realized that a cure little seaside cottage was out of the question, I set about picking a few hotels, trying to make them evenly spaced, so we would cover a lot of ground without having to move every day.

For our first night, I selected the Alexandra hotel in Lyme Regis. Next, I thought the Talland Bay Hotel near Looe and Polperro would be lovely. We had thought about going over to St. Ives and up to Tintagel, but I think it would take us too long to get back from there.

What do the experts think should be our last stop before Gatwick?
