I will be in France end of June/beginning of July (as some of you may know from my previous posts ) I will be leaving the Avignon area on July 3rd, to make my way to Lyon to catch my return to NY. I will be leaving the afternoon of the 4th from Lyon, so my plan is to stay there overnight, (arriving in Lyon sometime the afternoon of the 3rd) and see some highlights before heading home. My plan for Wednesday the 3rd is flexible. I will have a car that I'm returning in Lyon, and have no specific time I need to arrive in Lyon on Wednesday ( I would like to see some of the city even if I just walk around Vieux Lyon, get a feel for the city etc.). I was hoping to do a scenic drive to Lyon, but I'm not finding any scenic drives in my online searches. Any suggestions for that last day and a half (Wednesday morning to Thursday afternoon) are welcome. thanks!

No has responded, so it's possible my question is too complicated? Would love tips on anything to see between Avignon and lyon by car instead of just a straight highway drive. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Consider a detour to Gorge d'Ardèche, Arc d'Ardèche ( réserve naturelle de Gorge d'Ardèche ). We did it last September. The view from the top of a pass was particularly panoramic and good. Sorry, don't remember the name but it is on the route between Vallon/Arc d'Ardèche and St. Martin d'Ardèche.

On your way north from Avignon, visit the ancient Roman town of Vaison-la-Romaine. From there continue north to the olive town of Nyons; have a look at the cooperative, where you can buy all sorts of olive products. Walk around the old part of the town, up from the main square.

About an hour's drive north will take you to the small town of Dieulefit, famous for the yellow pottery produced by regional artisans.

Then head west for a stop at the medieval perched village of Le Poët-Laval, once a stronghold of the Knights of Malta. The village has been lovingly restored by the owners, who operate a small hotel and good restaurant, Les Hospitaliers.

That will give you a good day of sightseeing on your way to Lyon.

From Le Poët-Laval, continue west until you reach the motorway. If you want another stop, the pretty town of Montélimar, famous for its nougat, is just past the motorway.
