I love Aix! A vibrant, picturesque town with cafes and fountains and markets and churches. I guess some of the same could be said of Avignon, but it seemed more sedate, more museum-like than Aix.
I've only daytripped to both towns, so I can't recommend any hotels from experience. Do a search here on "Aix hotels" and lots should come up.
What's your price range? If money is no object, the Villa Gallici in Aix is a hotel at which I've always dreamed of staying.

I agree with Cimbrone. I have stayed in both cities for serveral days and much prefered Aix for the same reasons.
The Hotel Villa Gallici is where I stayed. I loved this hotel. It is expensive, but my travel agent got me a good price. If you have a good agent, check with them to see if they can get you a better price than what is offered on their website.
