I stayed almost three weks in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon at Le Prieuré.
As a non-driver, I had the options to sit by the fountain in front of my hotel to wait for the bus and chat up the locals, walk across the bridge and stop to watch the men playing boules, or walk up the hill by the ancient tower and take th shuttle boat across to Avignon. I spent the last night at the Hotel Europe to be near the train station.

In the Luberon area we fell in love with Le Mas de Cante Perdrix in Mazan.
Both the food and our hosts were outstanding. http://www.cante-perdrix.com/us.html

I just returned from the area and wished we had spent more time in Avignon. We stayed in St. Remy (Hotel Gounod - very good) and enjoyed it and the access in and out was great. Driving into Avignon was no problem and parked right under the Palaid de Papes! Amazing to just walk right out and be there. If you don't mind changing hotels, it would be nice to spend time in Avignon - we just don't like repacking.
