Autoroutes in France - how to pay

Here's an official site (in French but with illustrations) about what credit cards are accepted at the péages on the autoroute: http://www.parisrhinrhone.com/vf/pra...peage.asp#self

Under "moyens de paiement acceptés" (allowed ways of payment) click on "devises" to see what foreign currencies are accepted (US$ is accepted) or on "cartes de crédit" for credit cards.

Hope this helps.

The easiest is always to head for the lanes with the blue arrows and just slide a credit card in the slot. There is a red or black button to push to get a receipt.

There is probably no need to pronounce it if you are driving.

Will US credit cards work for tolls? I read on another thread about how they won't at gas stations. Anyone?

Credit card will work fine at the péage stations. They don't work at gas stations because the machines there require a card with a microchip.

The U.S. credit-card industry needs to get on with offering smart cards sooner rather than later.

kerouac,

I think it never hurts to know how something important is pronounced, just in case you need to ask about it.

Peage just means toll, but is also the word for the tollgate.

In any case, it is not a difficult word, if you already know how to pronounce such words as massage, voyage, triage, garage (American pronunciation!)....

But if the g's in garage and triage sound the same to you, you're in trouble.

And I thought that all these times I had been correctly pronouncing it as "guhrraahje".

If I use my credit card from US, will my bank add a series of charges, one for each tollbooth?

Possibly, depending on the amount of the charge.

Possibly, but it might depend on the amount of the charge.

I just read on another site that American credit cards will no longer be accepted at the péage on autoroutes.
and, they have seen signs indicating this at the tollbooths...

In the past, I have used my American Express or Visa and wisked through the CB or carte bleu lanes. To answer a question above, there is no additional charge other than the conversion rate, and with AMEX it was very minimal.

I am trying to confirm this issue regarding this big change in not accepting American credit cards (without the chip). Please report if you have actual info. Thanks.

The toll machines don't use the chip! They only use the magnetic strip, even on French cards. Any machine where the card just slides in and out without a code is only using the magnetic strip.
