Auto Europe is GREAT!

Since an old thread has popped up again questioning Auto Europe, here's my two cents. I've had three GREAT experiences with Auto Europe and am about to have my fourth. I would not use anyone else.

People will always have some bad experiences (though very valid) with large companies simply because of the sheer number of transactions, but as the majority of positive replies show, Auto Europe is one of your better bets for renting a car.

I agree totally! I've used Autoeurope many times and wouldn;t use anyone else. NO one else seems to be able to beat their prices.

Ditto and ditto! We've had good experiences both times we have rented from AutoEurope. Definitely plan to use them again when we return to Italy in October 2001.

I too used Auto Europe for a recent trip to Germany and their prices were great. However, we had billing problems with them. They overcharged us for our Mercedes upgrade and charged us for gas upon return of the car. We were told to either return the car fully empty and we would be charged for them to fill the car OR return the car full, which we did. They owed us about $225, which we recently received a credit on our card. So folks, for any car rental company, I highly recommend keeping ALL receipts, including gas receipts, which we did. We gave them the gas receipt, which showed the date and location of the gas station: 2 blocks from the drop off point. Even though the sales agreement showed $13.00 per day upgrade for the car, they charged us a completely different amount.

I also had a bad experiance with AutoEurope. I wanted to take advantage of their 25% off Mercedes Benz cars in Europe. Well first they have sent me what they called a total cost of rental (which was very differnt from what's on their web page), then after about 3times me asking me for details on what was included in the "Total cost" person gave me a breakdown (others just kept sending me the "total cost"), well the "Total Cost" did not include 12% Airport Tax or $1/day road tax. To make this story short I contacted Hertz got exactly the same but for $50 less (no specials) and with all the details first time around. I also later found out searching the net that I still could have gotten a better deal from some local/less known companies. So I guess the responses above are from people that work for AutoEurope or ones that do not do any reaserch just blindly go to AutoEurope.

I had exactly the same problem as Peter. I tried to take advantage of their Mercedes special and the system sent me a quote for 5 times more than other were paying on here.

Later I contacted AutoEurope and they tried to blame the problem on me stating that I must have contacted their prestige side of their business line. After I told them to look at their own web site and try the links, they realized they had a defective link.

They did offer me the same discount off the regular price of the car, plus and additional 5% ( because I asked), but by the time they did their homework and then responded, I had already booked with Europe by Car.

Many people have said great things about Auto Europe, and they did offer to make good on their mistakes (after first trying to blame me), so I will give them credit for trying.

Au contraire, Peter! Let me assure you that we do extensive research before renting a car in the US or in Europe. Also I do not work for AutoEurope.

To Peter,
Just because you don't happen to agree with me does not give you the right to get snarky about it. No, I don't work for Autoreurope, I just happen to have had the best luck with them...and yes I DO research before a trip.
Is it hard being so perfect and having ALL the answers? (or at least you think you do)

I've used Auto Europe numerous times and have nothing but praise for them. Perhaps you complainers really work for the opposition?!! When I use AE I always get an Avis car but at a much cheaper rate than Avis would give me.

To Peter:

What an ignorant comment - "So I guess the responses above are from people that work for AutoEurope or ones that do not do any reaserch just blindly go to AutoEurope."

Your thoughts and experiences are welcome, but we don't appreciate your patronizing attitude. If you want to be a jerk, pick another site.

Cheap, but I also had a rough experience .. they screwed up several things (reserved out car in the wrong place, gave us a drop off okay for a station that was closed, etc) leading to much stress and finagaling on the phone ... we rented a car for 3 days and spent hours on the phone dealing with it .. often got confused people on the phone, but we did always get someone ..
and they did credit my card when it was all said and done and reimburse for the taxi we had to take, etc

I MIGHT use them again ,but I would check and double check everything that they say, they are not very organized.

Stop questioning---I have used autoeurope at least 7 times--no problems but if there IS a problem they solve it quick and efficient. Isn't that what counts !!

Lou,

Yes, they did resolve our problem quickly. We did go to our Visa bank first to stop the charges until things were resolved. And we would also probably use them again. As I stated before I keep every receipt and recommend that everyone do the same.

And no Peter, I do not work for the competition.

Pick on Peter Day? Maybe I was a bit strong - my appologies to anyone i have offend it. Just those treads did looked like a trolls, my mistake. As for AutoEurope I did contact them on few occassions, and only after so many contacts got the response I was looking for "the Total cost of rental", I than found a better deal with Hertz. Not to say the Hertz had the best deal - but definitly better for the City and Dates of my vacation. My comment to everyone and point I wanted to make is that not all of us maybe so "lucky" getting the best rate. As for AutoEurope my experiance and comments are still: Web site does not indicate the cost, when contacting AutoEurope directly I got runaround with the total cost of the rental, then was able to get a rental for $50 less (without really searching), from another rental company which unlike AutoEurope did not have 25% off.
Final comment always shop around and always make sure you get detail breakdown so you are comparing apples to apples.

Raleigh > chill with the name calling it is no appriciated and I do not think it is necessary, also once you personally own this forum, then you can ask people to leave!

Yeah they kind of had no choice - Loose all to charge despute or get what they suppose to charge. As for keeping receipts that is a good point - I usually just keep the aggreament but you are right getting and keeping you last fuel fill up receipt will not hurt but may help.

Thanks for everyone's input.

To Peter: You obviously touched a nerve with several of us, but THANKS for the apology - the mark of a quality person. I'm sorry for coming across a bit strong also.

Happy travels!!!

To Raleigh...thanks for your comments.
To Peter...thanks for your appology.
And I can only repeat that I have always had great rates and great service from Autoeurope.
I'm not sure why some poeple get the runaround trying to get a rate. I have always been told the all inclusive rate as soon as I've called....no fuss...no muss!

I just made a reservation w/Auto Europe, and the fax they sent me spells it all out (albiet in pretty fine print.) Total cost includes tax, insurance, etc. Does not include additional driver fee, highway stickers where required, or road fee, to be paid locally. The rep on the phone informed me about the latter, with an estimated cost. "Client is advised to return the vehicle with a full gas tank and to *retain copies of gas receipts.*"

The rate is good, the staff have been polite and seem knowledgeable, and they've been very accomodating of my requests for additional info, changes, etc. But as with any contract, you've got to read it carefully and make sure you're comfortable with the terms.

Sandi -

If you check the Auto Europe website, they have photos of the cars and descriptions of passenger capacity. Click on car rentals, then choose the country in which you will be renting. You can "zoom in" for details. http://www.autoeurope.com/

Alfa Romeo 146: 4 Passengers, 11 cu. ft. Baggage Space, 4 Doors, 4 pax. Covered Hatchback, A/C Similar to Ford Escort
