Hi Bill - I noted to Steve on an earlier post, that we are getting our CDW(Collision damage waiver) through Travel Guard for $6/day compared to Autoeuropes $25/day. We are renting in October and I have never rented in Europe before, but researching I found this is probably safe. As far as using your credit card for travel insurance, etc. make such to verify with the credit card company I've heard some unpleasant stories that people who thought they were covered ending up not being. <BR>Anyways, I would also like to hear what the others have done in regards to the CDW. The rental company covers something with the rental, just ask them.

Another very satisfied Autoeurope customer---we've rented from them twice and are about to rent for the third time. We have waived the CDW in countries where that was acceptable because of coverage through our crdit card. In Italy, all insurance is a requirement. Anyway, as far as Auroeurope, they have proven to be reliable and professional.

Since noone has mentioned this yet, in case you did not know, Auto Europe is a wholesale agent. You do not go Auto Europe rental office at your destination, you rent form Avis, etc, that Auto Europe contracts with. If you do not make any changes to rental as booked, then you pay exactly as contracted. But if you make changes, it can get tricky. We had to change the arrangement and were quoted in local currency and when we got the bill, we noticed that the Avis performed conversion to US dollar at abominable exchange rate (profit to them) so I had to argue in length with Auto Europe to get the charge in local currency as quoted and have the credit company do the conversion instead. As for insurance, presuming you are from the US, your US auto insurance will almost certainly cover nothing in Europe. All the credit card with insurance coverage I have read said they provide collision and theft only in most European country (minus perhaps Ireland because they do not offer or Italy because they do not accept) So where do you get liability? They are apparently law in most European country to have basic rental fee to include the liability. I wrote to Hertz to get confirmation after reading discussion on this subject in a insurance industry bulletin board.

We were, mostly, satisfied with our transaction thru AutoEurope...except: buried in the fine print of our rental contract was an age limit clause - no driver over 70. That let out my husband. I forget what rental company we started out with (not a biggie, more of a in-Britain one), but they just picked up the phone, called Avis next door and we scooted over there to get a car we could both drive. Sorry - I can't recollect how we handled the insurance question.
