Attn: Fodors--System Glitches

Dear Fodors
Thanks for all the improvements you've made in Travel Talk.
At least two glitches keep rearing their ugly heads.
One is that whenever one posts a reply to a message, the screen puts you back at the first 50 postings, even though you started out at message # 555 or 102 or whatever. To get back to where you were, you have to scroll forward again.

The other, is that some punctuation marks, notably quotation marks, but others as well, show up only as question marks, messing up the text in messages.

thanks

Elaine,

If you are using IE, hit the back button 2-3 times and it will bring you to the place where you started posting the message. Works for me.

"""
???

3 quote marks
3 question marks

How did they come out?

I think the punctuation glitches are mostly when the text is copy/pasted from a Word document. When folks type directly into the text box most things are fine. But MS Word docs really get screwed up. We see ?'s, y's, and weirdest of all, 63355#'s (still don't know wthat that is)

I never copy from a Word processor, but those funny characters (y's recently, it seems) appear for me just when typing into the box IF I am typing some foreign accent character, the euro sign, etc. Any non-normal character.

Budman, thank you so much for your advice! Never thought of using the "back" key! I will try it! I found myself not posting replies because it may take long to go back to 51-100 or 101-150.

Sheila, aren't you in the UK? Maybe your keyboard has the Euro symbol on it, but the US keyboard doesn't. There was a time on this board that you could type in "&euro" or maybe it was "& euro" and voila! the Euro symbol appeared in the message when it was posted. Alas, this capability is no more.

It drives me nuts not to be able to use the accents - on a Europe board, no less. We used to be able to use them just fine, so Fodors should be able to fix this.

On the numeric keypad to the right of the main keyboard, with the number lock on, hold down the alt key and type 0128, then let up on the alt key. That will give you this > ? , a euro sign!

I guess not. Fodors must be "improving" things again. Every time they make changes we lose the ability to punctuate and use diacritical marks correctly. Usually, these things turn into little boxes. This time it's ys.

Y o Y can't they fix this?

On a UK keyboard, if you type "Crtl Alt 4" you get a Euro sign. If I type that now, that's what appears on the screen. but when it posts it shows as a question mark

Perhaps it's just my system - but I seem to have to wait forever for postings to appear - and click repeatedly before what I want appears -BUT all the Fodors pop-up ads appear practically at light speed.

Some of the problems discussed may be browser dependent. On my personal website, I don't even bother to test older versions of Netscape and IE, as well as less common browsers such as Mozilla and Konqueror. Commercial websites generally make a greater effort toward multi-browser compatibility, but none achieve complete coverage. I recently read a post on a technical forum about ESPN's website having some serious glitches for Konqueror users.

Betsy, I do not know what my secret is. It works for me from home (windows XP, whatever browser is built into AOL 7, copied from a Microsoft Works document), but it does not work for me from work (Windows 2000 professional, IE 5.5 browser, copied from a WordPerfect 10 document), comme ya, city franyais yle.
