You can ware anything that will not get you arrested before you get there!
I ceased to worry about it after the time we went to the Opera Bastille in Paris and decided to act rich and sit in the best seats. My wife had her dress-up outfit; I had my good suit. I felt like we were ok until we sat down beside a gentleman who was dressed in a very formal black T-shirt.
I would suggest that you look unlike a street bum, but anything decent will get you into your seat and back to your hotel.

Pretty much anything. I've gone to plays and operas dressing nicely--I think this is one of the joys of going to the theatre: getting to dress up and pretend to be an adult
. I've also gone casual--slacks and shirts. Although I've never worn jeans (its more of a personal choice), I've seen people in jeans and I don't think they stood out.
