Nobody should be embarrassed by old busybodies who get their kicks from harassing foreigners. If there are signs on the door, they should be obeyed, of course, but otherwise a respectful attitude is the most important thing. Most churches allow photography; some forbid flash. But that wouldn't stop some officious people from protesting the photos.
