I am now seeing lots of news reports on suspected fraudulent use that occurred in Russia, Canada, the UK, and now along the west coast of the U.S.---but nothing about Italy. Some hopefully all is OK there. Have a great trip, Statia.

Thanks for the info Linda and LoveItaly.

LoveItaly, aside from bringing emergency account contact info with me, I also leave all my account numbers and emergency numbers with someone at home so that I can make one phone call to have anything handled, if need be.

I just talked to a representaive from Wilmington Trust - Italy (at least as of today) is not on their "suspended" list for ATM use. However, Thailand, and several soviet republics are, due to fraud issues. The agent told me that in a country that's on the "suspended list" one needs to go into a bank and have "a face to face transaction" - taking a cash advance.

I am living in London and have been unable to take money out if my Wells Fargo account using my ATM. I called Wells Fargo and they told me that there has been so much ATM fraud in certain countries (they gave me England, Spain, and China as examples) that they have cut off all ATM transactions from those countries. When I asked them how I would be able to access my money (as I'm not on vacation) they agreed to send me a new card from a different "batch" which would allow me to take out money. So for anyone planning on traveling to those countries with Wells Fargo accounts,, it may be worth a phone call to request these new cards before you go and discover you can't take out any money.

P.S. The cards still allow POS transactions so you're not completely stuck.

I have a citibank ATM card, and tried to call them to confirm it will work in Israel. Guess what - the 800 number on my card is incorrect!! I got a different 800 number from them, the one on the card is for selling fraud insurance! With the citibank, I'm not surprised

Anyway, my ATM card worked where it supposed to work (not all ATMs in Israel accept US cards, but it was not a problem to find the right ones).

Ouch... Since Wells Fargo has all of our accounts it looks like they'll either need to give me another card that works or I'll be moving my account to another bank.

It's amazing how banks can deny access to your money, not notify you and make it your problem to try to get your money.
