Athens- Hotel

My husband and I will be travelling to Athens in November. We are wanting a nice hotel in downtown Athens but not too expensive as we will only be sleeping there. Does anyone have any recommendations for a nice hotel that serves breakfast at a decent rate? Thanks in advance. Pam

Two years ago we stayed at the Electra Palace in Athens. I'm 95% sure we booked through expedia and paid about $150 per night. Nice breakfast was included, and there is a pool on the roof. I am so happy we stayed in the Plaka district -- it has so much more charm. We sent several faxes requesting a room with a view of the Acropolis. They gave us some trouble about it at the front desk, saying all of those rooms were taken, but then we they saw we had requested it in advance, they gave in. I would also recommend a lovely, romantic (although expensive) restaurant called Pil Poul. You can dine on the roof and watch the light show at the Acropolis. The food was really good too.

We stayed at the Acropolis View Hotel 3 years ago for about $56 a night. It included a very nice breakfast. It's a small hotel on a side street across from the Acropolis and we loved it. From the rooftop garden you have a great view of the Parthenon and can see the light show at night. It was just a couple streets from the Acropolis and easy walking distance from the Plaka. I booked it from the Internet.

My husband and I were in Greece this past spring and we stayed at Hotel Attalos. Here's what I wrote on my travel page (http://www.luvtotravel.homestead.com/home.html):

Hotel Attalos
Athens
29 Athinas Street
Monastiraki
Phone: 01-321-2801,-2-3
Fax: 01-324-3124
19.000DR without breakfast (about $50)
Credit cards accepted, although they prefer cash.

Our room, #511, was on the backside of the building with a large balcony, view of the acropolis (when standing near the railing). There is a very nice roof top garden with bar and fabulous view of the acropolis. The room had twin beds, tv (we watched CNN), a/c, very, very small bathroom with hair dryer, tub/shower and curtain. The door didn't open all the way as it hit the sink. Small room for just one person at a time. Inside the closet was a safe. Very good location just 2 blocks up from the Monastriaki metro and the Plaka. Up a couple of blocks on the right is the central market, filled with meats, fish, seafood, vegetables, and spices. Other goods are sold as well.

Just returned from Greece and stayed at Best Western Esperia Palace. Moderate hotel with breakfast..some groups...but location can't be beat. Just a 5 minute walk to Plakka or Syntagma Square.
Have a great cab driver to escort you and give you a day trip in and around Athens if you are interested. Speaks excellent English and knows the city well!! Have fun..

Try the "Athenian Inn" Hotel. It is located in the heart of "Colonaki" which is considered to be Athens' shopping parasise, within walking distance from all the major sighseing spots. Prices must not exceed 50$ per night. Try as well "www.dilos.com". It's a greek hotel booking site where you can find a wide variety of hotels.

As if you didn't have enough choices, here's one more:
Royal Olympic Hotel
It's on a small side street but a 5 min. walk to the Plaka and the National Gardens, about 7 mins. to Syntagma Square. Rates reasonable and bkfst was plentiful & included.
The rooms were large and had a view of either the Acropolis or the Temple of Zeus.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions about this hotel or Athens. I just got back.

Hi Pam

Looks like you've got many good recommendations but if you'd like one more...We stayed at Herodion Hotel - very comfortable, clean, nice amenities, lovely view of the Parthenon and a 5 minute walk to Plaka and Acropolis (for about $125/night in May.)

Another suggestion. We stayed at the Hotel Astor a few weeks ago and loved it for it's location and superb bedroom views of the Acropolis. Details are at:-

Another vote here for the Attalos, I found this very pleasant and good value. A very friendly place, not too far from the plaka.
Also, the Athens Gate is very good. This is a bit more central and has a wonderful rooftop bar. I have stayed there twice and will do so again. I booked rooms there through Octopus Travel (go to the easyjet site and look for travel extras). I got a much lower rate than through the hotel direct / dilos travel / anywhere else I looked.

We stayed in The Olympic Palace for the first part of our Athens stay and the Electra Palace the second part. The Electra Palace was a thousand times better and they were the same rate. We didn't like the Olympic Palace at all. The rooms were tacky and the staff was surly. The Electra Palace was the exact opposite. They are about 1 block apart.

I've stayed at the Acropolis View twice and the Athenian Inn once; I think for the money, the Acropolis View is better, closer to Plaka. The Athenian Inn was nearer $100, than the 55 someone else mentioned; however, it was in May, not Nov. Breakfast was included at Acropolis View, also. Demetrius, at the front desk, is very helpful and friendly.

A second vote for the Athens Gate - you can go to the rooftop any season for the view (we brought our own drinks and nibblies in early May, as the bar only opens in June). Rooms are reasonable and cost effective. As said above, great central location - the Temple of Olympian Zeus is just across the road and the Acropolis down the road, turn left and there you are!

Just spent July and August in Greece. I'd recommend the Holiday Inn on Michaelolpolo (spelling not sure). They had a fantastic breakfast spread, room cost approx $100. Very near a subway station and getting to other parts of Athens was a breeze. Also stayed at the Zafolia, which was very nice. Again, its near a subway station, but also within walking distance of the Archeological Museum. We found the subway to be a great way to get around. We loved Athens, had the best time just walking through the neighborhoods, popping in and out of SuperMarket shops!! Can't wait to go back.

I second Felicia's recommendation. The Royal Olympic is a nice 4 stars, at a central location, it has a pool, the rooms are large, some have aa great view, and the rates are reasonable.
