I believe that the old airport closed when the new one opened at Spata in 2001, so there is only 1 airport now.
The question about hotels has been asked many times before, but the Sofitel seems to be the only close option. However, a regular poster here, Sheila, is in Greece at the moment and asked the same question a few days ago. You might get more up to date information from her when she returns next week.

You might try the website www.airwise.com to check out the airport location, etc., in Athens

You are definitely going to the new airport at Spata - the old Hellenikon airport is no longer operating. There must be somewhere, other than Sofitel, to stay nearer the airport than central Athens, but if so, it is a well kept secret.

just in from Athens.
Answer to question 1=nowhere. We opted to stay in the town. A cab is about y25 to and from the airport. It takes about 35 minutes non rush hour (which a 5am check in will be)
We stayed in the Novotel, which was recommended by Bill Barr, another Fodorite. The double cost us y123. They said it would be y168, but I said I'd seen it for y123 on the web (which I had)and they said that was the corporate rate, but then gave us the room at that rate anyway.
Th other hotel reecommended here is Hotel Attalos, which would, I think, have been about half the pice.
There is only one airport. Your duff info. (which my travelling companion also had) is the price of an out of date guide book. Spaa has been closed for nearly 2 years, and Athens is rated third best airport in the world
