Arranging tours while in Iceland, any thoughts?
Hello,

My family and I are travelling to Iceland late next month and would like to make arrangements to do some horseback riding and rafting. Should we pre-book these plans now, or will we be just as well off waiting until we arrive and making arrangements thru the hotel or the local tourist offices? Thanks!
Hope you have better luck this time. I'd still recommend booking ahead if it's something you really want to see. On my first trip to Ireland, I planned the entire trip around Kilkenny but didn't book a hotel -- and guess where there were no rooms!

Can't wait to see who's been to Iceland and what they suggest . . .

While you certainly CAN book things after your arrival in Iceland, it's high season in the summer months. The excursions you are interested in have limited capacity and so you're going to be a lot more comfortable booking in advance. A great site for info is:

http://www.re.is/

There, you'll learn about the various offerings. It's a top-shelf outfit. In addition to the two you've listed, be sure to take in the Blue Lagoon for a nice swim in the mineral water. I would not bother with a city tour, since you can easily explore Reykjavik on your own. Iceland is a totally non-intimidating and very refreshing change of pace. Happy Contrails!

I always pre-booked a few trips before going; summer has certainly become much more crowded in Iceland! (although not at all like most of the Continent) Eshtar has some of these tours, and Icelandair also arranges tours for you.
Since you're going in July and obviously like the outdoors, try arranging a hike in Thorvald (Thor's Woods) as well, if you can. It's incredible, and only open in the summer months.
Have a wonderful trip!

I think if you absolutely have your hearts set on a particular outing then you should probably make the arrangements beforehand. I was in Iceland, May 29-June3, and took 3 day tours but I made the arrangements once there. None of the tours were crowded but this was before "peak" season.
As above poster said, www.re.is is an excellant site. One of the tour companies also has a site at www.icelandexcursions.is
Dave-We were very pleased with our two day trips we booked (while in Iceland) with Reykjavik Excursions (www.re.is)earlier this month. Book ahead since you're going in peak season. Iceland is incredible, so takes lots more film with you than you've planned on taking
and ENJOY!
