We would like to atend a performance of LaBoheme in Naples in June. It is at the Arena Flegrea rather than the usual Teatro San Carlo in Naples. How far is that from Naples? The opera starts at 9:15 pm . Also are there trains late (around midnight) from Naples to Sorrento? Sorrento is our homebase for one week.Would appreciate any info. Thanks. Suzanne

I'm afraid you may not be able to do it without taking a taxi back to Sorrento.

According to the Circumvesuviana Web site, the last train from Napoli to Sorrento leaves at 22:39/22:42 (or 10:39/10:42 p.m.) depending on where you take it, in the Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) Stazione Centrale or the Circumvesuviana station which is near it. I have no idea, unfortunately, how the two stations are located relative to each other. You can look up the Circumvesuviana Web site and click on Tourist Information to make sure. It's the end of May; I would imagine that the schedule they give is the summer one.

As for the Arena Flegrea, it's located within the fairgrounds called Mostra d'Oltremare (which also has a Web site). There you can find a "mappa" (or map) as well as directions on how to get to it -- in Italian -- under "Come raggiungerci". Basically, it says that you take either the FS or the Metropolitana to "Campi Flegrei" and walk across the Piazzale Pietro Someone-or-other to the entrance. But if I remember correctly -- and I have to admit I have a poor sense of direction -- the Campi Flegrei are on the northwest outskirts of Naples, while Sorrento is southeast of the city.

The Arena Flegrea used to be, and I assume still is, an outdoor venue for opera. So, be prepared for this! Sounds like a terific night at the opera....let us know how it went.

Eloise, Many thanks for the information. Although the idea of seeing La Boheme outdoors in Naples sounds great, I'm not sure it's worth the expensive taxi we'd need to take to get back to Sorrento. Unless I find out anything different than what you wrote, we'll have to wait to see it (again) in Chicago where we live.
