People put ttt in the reply box just to make clear to others what they are doing. You can put anything you like, a dot or a dash - to achieve the same end. Others put in more decriptive reason - like 'ttt for Claire', when they think that the discussions in the thread may be of interest to her, perhaps because she has asked a similar question.

It used to be MUCH more common than it is now, largely because Fodors made it possible, about a year ago (when registration started) to "cite" the URL of an old thread. "Topping" it used to be the only good way to help someone find an old thread.
I still do it for brand new beginners, occasionally, figuring that they do not yet realiz that they can find their own prior posts by clicking on their old name (I bet someone learned that just now from my saying it again).
And to try to reduce confusion, I no longer say "ttt", preferring the more complete explanation...

halycon, it simply mean to make the thread go to the top as I did my Sept. trip report and as pointed out, once you get it to the top you can type an addition to your post, or only top it by a t or ttt or aven a ? The point is to not let the thread sink so you can't find it.
