<< Actually Ben I could give you the addresses of quite a few crack houses and brothels in the area >>

Could you mention a few so I'll know where to - cough - avoid?>>>>
Well not suprisingly - it's the big estates off the Harrow Rd (which no tourist would ever go to - in particular the Amberley Rd and around the Canal).

Don't get the wrong idea - I can do this for any area of London - even Mayfair (Shepherds Market, Hyde park underpasses etc). I have an alternative mental map of london in my head that is very different from that in the guidebooks.

Paddington's OK. If you can get a decent hotel there then I wouldn't worry about all the other stuff. It's no more dangerous than anywhere else in London - and if you use your loaf you'll be fine.

This is the second (recent)post about the Paddington area. I don't understand why people are so down on this area. I think it's a great area for tourists. It's got the train station, which is not just for the Heathrow Express, and the Tube. I've stayed at a B&B in the Sussex Gardens area, which is literally right around the corner from the train station/Tube as well as the Best Western Mornington Hotel. I've been happy with both budget accomodations. The area has many convenience stores for buying morning papers, sundries, and fresh fruit or snacks, many pubs, laundromats, an internet cafe, etc. It even has a hospital with an emergency room which, unfortunately, my mother had to visit on our last trip during the winter. The buses are ever-present as are cabs. Plus, Hyde Park is right around the corner and a pre-breakfast walk is a great way to start the day. Personally, I enjoy coming back to Paddington at the end of the day as it seems more like a neighborhood and a bit like home. The only other area I've stayed in was Mayfair (Holiday Inn) many years ago. I prefer Paddington for price and location.

"I think it's a great area for tourists. It's got the train station, which is not just for the Heathrow Express, and the Tube." All true - unfortunately it also has some of the dowdiest, down at the heels B&B hotels in all of London.

Of course there are some decent properties in the area - but they are definitely out numbered by the other sort. It is similar to earls Court in that there are some nice places to stay, and some good bargains. But the unsuspecting tourist arriving after an overnight flight expecting a comfortable place from the gleaming photo of the georgian row house on the web site -- only to find threadbare carpets, naked light bulbs, and a continental b'fast in the basement.
