My husband has a carry on Travel Pro which he has carried, well, countless miles - he is a platinum AA frequent flyer - and never had a problem getting it into the overhead or been told it was too big.
When we were at LaGuardia last month "they" (agents at the metal detectors) told him he had to check it because it wouldn't fit through their wire form they have for measuring carry on suitcases. We went back and checked the suitcase and when we returned different agents were working the metal detectors and letting people through with the SAME SIZE suitcase. It was very irritating but the lesson is, it can be a carry on suitcase but depending upon who is working the screening process, your suitcase may not make it through.
Using that metal form to measure suitcases, I would say the only suitcase that would pass would be a child's size suitcase.

Any legitimate carry-on - 22" or less will fit the airlines reqiurements. A 28" suitcase is not a carry-on - it's a two weeker and should absolutely be checked - for the safety of everyone on the plane. (I'm so sick of people trying to stuff everything and anything in the overheads - then not being able to get it out again - and half the time dropping it on someone in the process.)

I took a bag that was vertically long of alomst that size (or even a bit bigger?)at least once as a carry-on on a 20hour flight. That was more than 20 years ago and Many from Asia and Middle-East seemed to do that so I did not stand out much. Today I don't think they will let you do it nor I have the courage.

..agree with nytraveler. I am really annoyed with overhead hogs who try to put "non carry-on bags", baby stuff that is about a yard in diameter, and a souvenir vase big enough to store rice for a household for a year in the overhead..especially when my head is under the overhead. re the 22"- I thought some airlines are now saying 21" though most use the culmutive measurements. I agree policy varies..in fact I think Ben Stiller did a skit in "Meet the Parents" which I was reminded of by the post from Ronda.

I wouldn't worry too much. They let people get away with anything as carry-on these days. One of the things I miss most about the "old days" was the actual enforcement of rules. Nothing irritates me more than some DA rolling his worldly possessions down the aisle, over my foot, then into my head as she attempts to lift the item into the overhead compartment.
If you don't get on to the plane ASAP, you almost NEVER get the bin directly over your head - you know, the one that is supposedly assigned to your seat.
Way to go, now you guys got me all fired-up...

Gee - I must be traveling in a different world than Zeus. I find most airlines have stricter rules (and enforce them) than in the "old days". It used to be every plane was full of people lugging shopping bags, carry ons, garment bags, duffel bags, etc. Now the budget airlines, and even most "legacy" lines, have much more stingent rules.
Doesn't really affect me since I usually only use a 19 in. travelpro, or ocassionally a 21 incher. But w/ so much less carry on in the cabins I never have a problem finding space for my bag anymore.

I agree with you, Janis. In fact those security and gate agents also like to enfoce the 2 items per person as carry on. So if you have a computer, carry on bag, and a purse, be prepared to stuff your purse in your carry on. I carry one of those Le Sport Sac purses (nylon) for that reason - wad it up and stuff it in. I haven't had them count food bags yet (take out from a restaurant to eat on the plane). By the way, I am ALWAYS polite and nice to them no matter how bossy they might be. Not that it helps.
