I just finished reading the September issue of IN STYLE with lots of pages devoted to tights, leggings and - what did they call them? - footless tights. For those inquiring minds out there, here's the explanation of the difference between them:
"Leggings qualify as pants unto themselves; footless tights go underneath a floaty dress or miniskirt. Leggings are thicker and therefore provide more opacity."
And, for those of you who are wondering how to complete your newly stylish outfit, "What shoes do you wear with these tights? Anything, from ballet flats to platforms, kitten heels to stilettos. Ballet shoes are a classic Audrey Hepburn look that complements leggings perfectly."
Of course, every model wearing leggings on this particular page is wearing them UNDER a dress or skirt.
Somehow, I can't quite see my personal style icon - Audrey - swathing herself in 14 layers of clothing. Forget about wanting to leave the 80s behind once and for all. Less is more in my book.

marigross---Visualizing bellies "muffin-topping" over jeans is just too too funny!! I've shared your phrase with several friends and they agree you have definitely coined a new descriptive phrase. At least it's new to us! Congrats!

The term "muffin top" to denote a fat tummy hanging over a pant top was not coined by marigross. I have seen it in print in many magazines. I have also heard the term stated by "Kath" in the Australian hit T.V. comedy "Kath and Kim" several seasons ago.
I guess you don't get the Sundance Channel.
