Apt recs: Canal St. Martin or Parc des Buttes Chaumont areas

Dear All,
We're in early planning stages for a three-week trip to Paris...having previously stayed in many other parts of town (Marais, Latin Quarter, St. Germain, 2nd, 7th, 8th, 9th, 15th, 16th and 17th), we thought we'd give the Canal St. Martin or Parc des Buttes Chaumont areas a try. Our wish list:

At least one full bedroom (no studios), in the comfortable - luxurious range (don't want a basic, no-frills apartment). Good kitchen and bathroom. wifi or other internet access. Washing machine. Stylish (but not ultra modern) decor. Well kept building with elevator (we don't want a ground floor apartment). An extra half-bath or two-bedroom, two-bath apt would be great (two baths are always appreciated and we can stick our luggage out of the way in the second bedroom).

Neighborhood with a selection of cafes and restaurants (would love to have good Vietnamese and Lebanese restaurants nearby and definitely want a good local boulangerie/patisserie). Close to public transportation (a given for most of Paris anyway). A good outdoor food market would be lovely. A tree lined street would be a bonus (we love seeing trees from city apartments)

Budget -- up to $1700 per week.

Your recommendations much appreciated!

If the apartment is near the locks of the canal before it goes underground, I think that its location is better--within walking distance of Place de la République--than the Parc des Buttes Chaumont.

Thank you, Michael, those are good points to keep in mind, but I am also hoping for some specific agency/apartment recommendations.

Anyone out there who can help?? Hello?

There are several places you can begin your apartment search, try vrbo.com, find your preferred area in Paris and narrow down your search or you might take a look at vacationinparis.com. Have used these two and others in 11 visits to Paris. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Thanks, I'm aware of those (and others). I'm trying to find something from Fodors specific to those to areas -- apartments they have rented themselves or know someone who has rented.

We found any number of places like you describe on VRBO before we ultimately decided to stay in the 14th on this trip (in May).

Relatively small numbers of Americans have stayed in these areas until recently because they are emerging neighborhoods.

We just thought through how we were going to spend our time and decided that the 14th was more central. But next trip . . . .
