April 2004 in France: anyone else finding cars, hotels, etc. already booked up?

We're planning a late April 2004 trip to Champagne and the Lorrain (WWI sites, mostly, plus a couple of days in Paris).

I've tried a variety of dates, but am finding cars and hotels unavailable. For example, using autoeurope's website, I tried to check rental cars at CDG, without success. Just tried a couple of hotels in Reims, including an Ibis - again, nothing available.

Of course, I'm not panicking, as we can be flexible, was just wondering whether anyone else had similar experiences.

It's too early to reserve for then. They aren't booked--just not taking reservations.

Have you tried e-mailing any of the establishments directly and asking about bookings? Of course, sometimes the e-mail doesn't ever get answered which can be frustrating....just a thought..what have you got to lose?

If you haven't yet solidified your itinerary of WWI sites, you might consider adding Bruge. A couple of Octobers ago we took a day trip with Quasimodo Tours which we would highly recommend (http://www.quasimodo.be/bustrips.htm#1). The poem "In Flanders Fields" was written at one of the sites visited and April would seem to be an appropriate time to visit although the chilly, intermittent rainy day of our visit enhanced the imagined horror.

If you like WWI literature you might read "Nurses at the Front" edited by Margaret R. Higonnet (ISBN 1-55553-484-8).

I suggest calling AutoEurope--they are very reliable and have great phone assistance.

Since you do have specific hotels you wish to stay at, do email them directly and let them know your plans.

I have done the same for a visit in 7/04 and have gotten reservations. While inquiring at just a few hotels though, I could not get reservations because they did not take reservations so early.

Policies vary and a hotel may ask for a deposit (not just a credit card guarantee) for such an early reservation. At least this will secure your reservation fully.
